Making the most of your PhD in the private sector

This course helps doctoral candidates and PhDs translate their research experience into skills an employer can read in the private sector.

It combines work on each individual background, an analysis of what recruiters expect, and practical scenarios.

Programme

Understanding the private job market

  • Who recruits PhDs, for which roles and in which sectors.
  • The main job families open to you: R&D, engineering, consulting, data, regulatory affairs, intellectual property and project management.
  • What an employer really expects from a PhD profile, and the misconceptions that persist.

Identifying and articulating your skills

  • Telling scientific, methodological and transferable skills apart.
  • Drawing concrete, measurable achievements out of your thesis.
  • Building your skills portfolio and matching it to real vacancies.

Being visible and convincing

  • CV and online profile: what works with a non-academic recruiter.
  • Preparing your pitch and adapting it to who you are talking to.
  • Mock interviews and group feedback.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • describe their research experience in language a company understands;
  • target the roles and sectors that fit their profile;
  • produce a CV and a pitch suited to the private sector;
  • prepare for a job interview and argue the value of their doctorate.

Teaching methods

Methodology input, small-group work and filmed role play. Every participant leaves with a reworked CV and a personal action plan.

Assessment and follow-up

Learning is assessed at the end of the session (self-assessment and group debrief), followed by an individual review after three months.
