About the Individual Fellowships
Practical information and application
The ERC, European Research Council, set up by EU, funds top researchers in Europe, of any nationality, helping them pursue great ideas at frontiers of knowledge. On Wednesday 23 May 2018, they opened the ERC Advanced Grant 2018 call, which has a total budget of 450 million euros and will therefore be able to finance around 194 grants.
Who can apply?
The ERC Advanced Grant call is addressed to scientists recognized in their field, nationally and internationally.
Applicants for the ERC Advanced Grants are expected to be active researchers who have a track-record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years. The Principal Investigators should be exceptional leaders in terms of originality and significance of their research contributions.
For detailed information, please take a look at the ERC Work Programme 2018, (page 25f).
What can be funded?
Applications can be made in any field of research. The ERC's grants operate on a 'bottom-up' basis without predetermined priorities.
The research must be conducted in a public or private research organisation (Host Institution). The HI must provide appropriate conditions for the Principal Investigator to independently direct the research and manage its funding.
ERC grants support projects carried out by an individual researcher who can employ researchers of any nationality as team members. It is also possible to have one or more team members located in a non-European country.
Vacancies for team members interested in joining an ERC led research project, can be published on the ABG-website.
How much does the funding cover?
Advanced Grants may be awarded up to € 2.5million for a maximal period of 5 years. However, an additional € 1 million can be made available to cover eligible “start-up” costs in the following cases:
An ERC grant can cover up to 100% of the total eligible direct costs of the research plus a contribution of 25% of the total eligible costs towards indirect costs.
