Doctoral education in Germany

Falk Bretschneider is historian at the Center for interdisciplinary studies and researches on Germany (CIERA) which is a group of 11 French institutions of higher education and research.

On the occasion of the General Assembly of the Association Bernard Gregory (ABG) and the announcement of the appointment by the association of a new correspondent for Germany in partnership with the Franco-German University (UFA), he gave a very interesting overview of the doctoral education in Germany. His presentation is based on three main areas:
- Structures and social conditions of doctoral education in Germany
- The reform of doctoral education and its actors
- The insertion of young doctors in the labour market.

Germany is the country with the highest rate of PhDs in the world. Between 24,000 and 26,000 theses are defended each year (about 10,000 in France) and the title of "Doktor" has a status unknown from young french researchers.
