The Association of Indian Universities.Based in New Dehli, the AIU (Association of Indian Universities) is an organization linking universities and the Indian government and acting as a bureau of information, coordination and consultation.
The AIU is particularly concerned with the recognition of studies and degrees/diplomas awarded by universités in India and abroad, as well as with the development of exchanges of members of the teaching and research staff.
At the international level, the AIU is the organization representing India in the agreement signed with France in 2008 - Conférence des Présidents d'Universités (CPU) and Conférence des Directeurs des Ecoles Françaises d'Ingénieurs (CDEFI) – for the set up of an Indo-French Consortium of Universities (IFCU).
The University Joseph Fourier (UJF) in Grenoble is in charge of the French secretariat for two years.
The initiative's main objectives are to encourage the mobility of students and teachers and to set up among others common PhD programs, including the opportunity of a stay of at least six months in India for French students and in France for Indian students.
For more information, please see the text of the agreement (in French), and the press release on the UFJ’s website.
Furthermore, on the AIU's website, "Research" section, you will find a report published in 2009 by this organization on the international students in Indian universities.
This population increased between 2004/2005 and 2007/2008, from a total of 13,267 to 21,206 students.
The majority of them comes from Asia with a total of 15,437 in 2007/2008. Only 309 come from Europe, including 53 French (they were 11 in 2004/2005).
