High in Color

After a CIFRE convention thesis in applied mathematics with Kodak, Valery Risson found a job with Hewlett Packard at their R&D department in Barcelona.Valery Risson defended his thesis entitled ”Lighting Conditions in Amateur Photography” at the Ecole des Mines engineering school in Paris in December 2001. At the same time, he filed his résumé on the Hewlett Packard (HP) job site. Following an initial telephone interview, he was invited to Barcelona in June 2002. By August he was on staff. Since then, in the space of four years, Valery has been through three career changes. His PhD training together with his years of experience have earned him a grade 3 on a scale of 4.
“At first I was hired in a position of expertise as a specialist in printer colors, but very soon I ended up managing project cycles, from innovation to industrialization, including the development phase. As a result, I was in contact with a lot of different people, which enabled me to better understand how HP was structured.” The advantage: Valery made himself known.
Since 2005, he has been head of the development of image quality control processes for large format printers. His responsibilities? “There are two aspects to studying image quality. The first involves diagnosis: how do you set up measurement processes based on image analysis to automate the quantitative and qualitative detection of image quality. The second applies to the equipment: how to make a printer evolve toward a closed-loop system with the help of scanners or optical sensors to improve the visual quality of printing and develop printers as a dynamic correction system.”
