The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science

Independent administrative institution, the JSPS aims at contributing to the advancement of Science in all fields of the Natural and Social Sciences and the Humanities.Supported in large part by annual subsidies from the Japanese government, the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) has for main functions :
- To foster young researchers,
- To promote international scientific cooperation,
- To award Grants-in-Aid for scientific research,
- To support scientific cooperation between academic
community and industry,
- To collect and distribute information on scientific
research activities.
JSPS offers six fellowship programmes, each with different eligibility requirements.
Among these programmes, there are:
- The postdoctoral Fellowship for foreign researchers which was established to assist promising and highly qualified young foreign researchers wishing to conduct research in Japan. A monthly maintenance allowance of 364,000 yens (approximately 2,700 euros) is awarded for a period of 12 to 24 months.
- The Postdoctoral Fellowship programme (short-term) which was launched this year to provide special short-term quotas for North America and European researcher to experience firsthand the research and living environment in Japan. Monthly maintenance allowance - 364,000 yens for PhD holders, 200,000 yens (approximately 1,500 euros) for non-PhD holders - is awarded for a period of 1 to 12 months.
