Topic description

This project is a collaboration between the Xlim research institute and the Center for Technology Transfers in Ceramics (CTTC, https://www.cttc.fr/en/technologies/plateforme-alterinov-by-cttc/) in Limoges. We propose here to explore the potential of additively manufactured electronics (AME) at microwave frequencies by using state of the art hybrid polymer/metal 3D printers. This approach combines the fused deposition modeling (FDM) and microdispensing technologies to print low loss polymers and highly conductive metals traces in a same 3D object.
The thesis objectives are :
- To design passive microwave components that are specifically adapted to the potential and constraints of such technologies: shielded waveguides, 3D packages, couplers, signal distribution of antenna arrays …
- To use specific microwave characterization techniques in order to evaluate and select the most appropriate polymers/metals
- To optimize the printed material performances (electrical conductivity, custom artificial dielectrics)
- To measure the components performances at room temperature but also using dedicated climate chambers
- To publish the results in highly ranked scientific journals (IEEE) and to present the work in the major conferences of this domain (IMS, EuMC, …)
The devices will thus be designed/characterized and measured in the MCAO research group in the XLim research institute (CNRS/University of Limoges). They will be fabricated with the help of the CTTC of Limoges. The PhD student will work in the two places in collaboration with Xlim's researchers and the CTTC's doctors/engineers/technicians.
We aim at fully exploiting the potential of AME in order to maximize the size/mass/performances ratio of microwave devices thanks to original concepts using the 3rd dimension

Candidate's profile
The candidate must have a Master II in hyperfrequencies electronics or similar diploma (engineer). A knowledge of the microwave domain (S parameters, guided propagation, passive microwave devices) is a prerequisite. A good knowledge of the of CAD tools in electromagnetics (CST and/or HFSS) as well as Matlab will be appreciated. Finally, a knowledge of the 3D printing world is appreciated even if not mandatory.
