Topic description
PhD fellow in polymer chemistry – synthesis, characterization and application of functional copolymers and polymer microcapsules with tunable mechanical and surface properties
A 3 years PhD funding in the frame of a collaborative project financed by the French Research Agency (ANR) is proposed. The candidate will be located in Lyon (Polymer Materials Engineering Laboratory, https://imp-umr5223.cnrs.fr/) and affiliated to the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1 and the Materials Doctorate school. The work will involve tight collaborations with physicists from the Nanosciences Interdisciplinary Center of Marseille (CINAM), and the Biomechanics and Bioengineering Laboratory of Compiègne (BMBI).
The project will involve the synthesis and characterization of functional copolymers as well as the preparation and characterization of microcapsules with controlled diameter, membrane thickness and surface functionality.
This multidisciplinary project will include:
-The synthesis of complementary clickable hydrosoluble and organosoluble functionalized statistical copolymers
-The characterization of their chemical structure and physical properties by e.g. NMR, FTIR, DSC, TGA…
- The synthesis of tailored polymer microcapsules by interfacial Copper-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition reaction in water-in-oil inverse emulsion, using the membrane emulsification technique
-The detailed characterization of polymer microcapsules using e.g. laser diffraction, optical microscopy, (cryo) scanning electron microscopy, fluorescence confocal microscopy, as well as the characterization of the viscoelastic and thermomechanical properties of the networks constituting the microcapsule membrane by DMA, DSC, tensile testing…
-Sustained interactions with the physicist partners for the investigation of the rheological and mechanical properties of the microcapsules
Good knowledge in the field of macromolecular engineering and practical expertise in the synthesis and/or chemical modification of polymers are desirable. Knowledges in the elaboration and characterization techniques of polymer colloids in dispersed media are also highly relevant expertise. Besides, skills in English writing, project management, independency, teamwork, relational and communication skills are essential.
Please send your CV, a motivation letter stating your interest and motivation in initiating a PhD thesis, and the contact of at least two persons able to support your application.
