Pavement surface rutting, Modeling, uncertainties, Maintenance
Topic description

The ANR-MECADESOS project concerns the implementation of a preventive maintenance strategy for the surface layers of road pavements, in order to increase their lifespan while reducing energy expenditure, materials, etc. The targeted pathology is surface layer rutting, one of the most common degradations of the surface layers of road pavements. The strategy is based on an approach combining experimental and advanced numerical methods.
Task 1 of the project concerns the deterministic modeling of surface layer rutting. Task 2 of the project concerns innovative experimental campaigns involving the traffic simulator (MLS10) of GC2D as well as the double high energy tomograph (DTHE) of INSA Lyon. Task 3 is the stochastic part of the project. This should result in an operational method for designing the surface layers which is accessible to road engineering companies and project managers.
This thesis will be integrated into tasks 2 and 3 of the project. The uncertainties in the experimental processes will be observed and estimated within the task 2 and then exploited in task 3 in the implementation of planning for monitoring operations of the surface layers of road pavements.
The overall purpose of the project will therefore result from the work carried out in this thesis.

Candidate's profile
Carrying out this work therefore requires a solid background in mechanics with ideally a strong component in modeling. The typical profile targeted is that of students who have completed a research master's degree or an engineer in mechanics or mechanical engineering.
