Topic description

The present project aims to combine continuous fiber-reinforced composite materials technologies with polymer additive manufacturing. This new hybrid process involves 3D printing of structures directly onto the surface of a composite plate. It would thus allow for reducing the mass of the final products through a topological optimization of the overprinted structure. Other expected benefits of this new process include customization of parts and reducing manufacturing costs (replacing molds and presses with a 3D printer). The objective of the thesis work is to ensure good adhesion between the composite and the printed part. Therefore, the project consists in studying the physicochemical phenomena and characterizing the welded zones according to the process parameters and materialsused.
The project also includes the modeling of the welding according to determine the welding quality. The goal is to be able to reliably predict the compatibility of two thermoplastics and the adhesion strength without performing extensive experimental tests.
The project is developped towards applications for aeronautical and railway structural parts. Constraints related to the use of certified materials must therefore be considered.
