Topic description

The microalga Ostreopsis, toxic to humans and marine biodiversity, has emerged in temperate areas, notably on the Basque Coast since 2021. Ostreopsis algal blooms produce toxins, including palytoxin and ovatoxins, as well as sulfur compounds such as Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP). Toxin concentrations alone do not fully explain the observed health effects. Additionally, the volatile sulfur compounds produced, such as Dimethyldisulfide (DMDS), can reach potentially harmful concentrations, but their contribution to health impacts has never been investigated. This project aims to understand the production mechanisms of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) during blooms, study their transfer between water and air, identify bacteria metabolizing DMSP, and evaluate toxicological effects on lung and skin cells and macroinvertebrates. Observations of Ostreopsis blooms up to September 2023 on the Basque Coast highlight the importance of this research to guide the management of future occurrences, involving expertise in analytical chemistry, microbiology, and microalgal ecology.
