Topic description

The aim of the thesis is to study the lesional effects of cavitation caused by projectile impact. The results of previous studies at LaMé and IRDL/ENSTA-Bretagne will form the basis for further work on cavitation phenomena in biological structures. The first step will be to determine experimentally the pressure, velocity, acceleration or impulse thresholds leading to cavitation, as well as the various physical parameters involved (ballistics, impacted materials and fluids), and to propose a sufficiently reliable simulation model, adapted to the range of our experimental parameters. This model will enable more extensive parametric studies than just experimental tests. Secondly, we need to understand the physical mechanisms involved and the lesional effects on tissues. This second part of the study will enable us to define lesion criteria associated with the cavitation thresholds identified.
