Topic description

Description of the scientific project:

The use of light as a lever to trigger chemical reactions is booming, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional processes. Photocatalysis, which refer to the use of a catalyst able to transfer light energy to a chemical reaction, opens up fascinating perspectives. However, challenges remain to be addressed, particularly in terms of recyclability and efficient use of solar light.

Project Objective:

This Ph.D. aims to design an innovative photocatalytic material, incorporating metallic complexes fixed on ZnO powder, to improve the performance and durability of the photocatalyst. The goal is to optimize its efficiency in the functionalization of nitrogen-containing molecules, which are essential scaffold in many high-value-added compounds (pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, advanced materials...)."

Skills achieved:

  • Molecular synthesis and characterization of new metallic complexes.
  • Development, optimization, and characterization of a hybrid photocatalytic material.
  • Study of its performance in selective functionalization reactions.
  • Study of recycling, light stability for an ecofriendlier process.

The host team and its collaborators already possess optimized synthetic pathways for ZnO, metallic complexes, and a robust surface functionalization method.
