Design of new electrocatalysts for the production of green hydrogen via water splitting

Description du sujet

The proposed PhD thesis aims at the synthesis of nanoparticles based on transition metal oxides for efficient H2 production via water splitting. The approach will be based on our recent work published in 2023 (see web link above) which consists in the combination two different TMO phases into a core-shell structure - a conductive core and a catalytically active shell - with high specific activity. The PhD student will be responsible for the synthesis and the characterization of core-shell nanoparticles (crystal structure, chemical composition, size and morphology) using the equipment on the IPCMS platforms (TEM, XRD, granulometry …). The electrocatalytic activity of the nanoparticles will be assessed by collaboration with the Institute of Chemistry and Processes for Energy, Environment and Health (ICPEES) in Strasbourg. In order to elucidate the electrochemical mechanism at play and to determine the electrocatalytic efficiency, the PhD student will carry out at the IPCMS a complete study of the core-shell nanoparticles as a function of the chemical composition and structure.

Profil du candidat

The candidate must hold a MSc. degree in Material Chemistry, physical chemistry or materials science. The candidate must have a strong interest in learning about synthesis methods to address multi component nanostructured materials and advanced characterization techniques (electronic microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy …). A good knowledge of solid state chemistry and in associated analytical chemistry techniques are required. Skills in electrochemistry applied to nanomaterials will be appreciated. We are looking for a highly dynamic and rigorous student with scientific curiosity who will successfully complete this interdisciplinary PhD project.
