PhD programme in life sciences by EMBL

Bérénice Kimpe - International Cooperation

The PhD programme developed by EMBL is now open! Get a full funding for your PhD project and benefit from the excellence of EMBL and its partners.
EMBL is Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences. We are an intergovernmental organisation established in 1974 and are supported by 22 member states. It performs fundamental research in molecular biology, studying the story of life. We offer services to the scientific community; train the next generation of scientists and strive to integrate the life sciences across Europe.

We are international, innovative and interdisciplinary. We are more than 1600 people, from over 80 countries, operating across five sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Heidelberg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). Our scientists work in independent groups and conduct research and offer services in all areas of molecular biology. Our research drives the development of new technology and methods in the life sciences. We work to transfer this knowledge for the benefit of society.

The EMBL International PhD Programme is Europe’s ‘best in class’ PhD programme for the life sciences. 240 students from over 40 countries are carrying out PhD research at EMBL at any time. Every year we admit an average of 60 new students, who belong to the top science graduates in their countries.

The EMBL International PhD Programme provides comprehensive training that promotes scientific excellence, independence and creativity. We try to maintain a careful balance between theory and practice, between close mentoring and creative freedom, between collaborative teamwork and independence. More than 95% of our students successfully complete their PhD degree and on average they publish two first author papers based on their PhD work.

In 1997 EMBL was granted the right to award its own PhD degree, however in order to integrate our students into national academic networks we have chosen to give degrees jointly, together with partner universities in 17 European countries. After graduating from EMBL over 80% take up positions in the member states and thereby enrich the national systems with the expertise, skills and networks acquired at EMBL.

Would you like to contribute your creativity to an international team of scientists from all disciplines focusing on basic research in the area of molecular life sciences?

We invite candidates with background in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering and Molecular Medicine to apply.

EMBL opens the door to your scientific career: our students have an outstanding publication record, are a vital part of our global collaborations and receive their degrees jointly with our network of excellent partner universities in 17 different countries.

Our PhD positions come with generous fellowships, including broad health care benefits and pension access.

Please apply online through http://www.embl.de/training/eipp/application/index.html

Registration deadline: 10 April 2017
Deadline for submission of the online application: 17 April 2017
