Description du sujet
The Institut de Chimie des Milieux et Matériaux de Poitiers (IC2MP) is recruiting a PhD candidate for an ambitious and innovative research project. This project addresses environmental challenges related to plastic waste management by transforming these materials into advanced porous materials for strategic applications, particularly in gas separation.
Currently, only 9% of plastics are recycled globally, with the majority ending up in landfills or polluting the environment. Mechanical recycling methods, although widely used, are limited by the diversity of plastics, their post-use degradation, and the presence of additives. In this context, chemical valorization offers a promising alternative.
This project investigates an innovative approach: using plastic waste as precursors for the synthesis of microporous carbons. These materials, with their unique structural properties, show significant potential for applications such as selective gas separation. Specific objectifs are:
-Investigate a variety of polymers derived from plastic waste to develop highly microporous carbons.
-Elucidate the mechanisms of plastic degradation and the processes leading to the formation of carbon-based materials.
-Assess the adsorption and gas separation performance of these materials under high-pressure conditions, focusing specifically on CO₂/H₂ and CO₂/CH₄ mixtures.

Présentation établissement et labo d'accueil
The Institut de Chimie des Milieux et Matériaux de Poitiers (IC2MP) is a multidisciplinary Joint Research Unit (UMR) affiliated with the University of Poitiers and the CNRS (Chemistry and Earth & Universe Sciences). Specializing in chemistry and surface geosciences (UMR 7285), IC2MP was established in 2012 through the merger of four historically significant UMRs in Poitiers (LACCO, LCME, SRSN, and HYDRASA), with a legacy spanning over 40 years. The institute comprises approximately 260 members, including around 100 researchers and faculty, 50 permanent technical staff, and roughly 110 non-permanent members, among whom 90 are doctoral students.
Profil du candidat
The ideal candidate should possess a Master's degree (or equivalent) in catalysis and/or materials chemistry, with demonstrated expertise in materials characterization techniques and catalytic reactions. Proficiency in written scientific English is essential. We will place particular emphasis on the candidate's enthusiasm for scientific research, strong analytical skills, and ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
